Spindleshanks American Bistro and Wine Bar represents the best of both old and new Lake Tahoe.

Its rustic building, which still evokes the feel of a traditional mountain lodge despite any incarnations, dates back to the days when Lake Tahoe mainly was accessible by steamship and train. Yet one look at it's contemporary menu and extensive wine list and it's clear that Spindleshanks is a restaurant for the 21^st century.

Opened in 2000 by partners Steve Marks and Herman Schuchmann, Spindleshanks has become a Tahoe Vista, Calif., institution in a short amount of time. By offering regional American Cuisine and a variety of wines in a casual atmosphere, the pair created a dining experience that caters to both large families and couples seeking a romantic setting

Spindleshanks History

In approximately 1927 the Sandy Beach Resort was built, which is now the home of Spindleshanks. The existing fireplace (inside and out) warmed guests as they entered the hotel’s lobby and created a cozy gathering place for visitors outdoors in the summer evenings. The Resort also featured a restaurant and grocery store. At some point a soda fountain was added.

In 1942 the Tahoe Vista Post Office took up residence in the hotel lobby. By the early 1950’s the Post Office was finally opened year round to businesses. It was at this time the site truly became the focal point of activity in Tahoe Vista. Hotel guests and residents would gather around the outdoor portion of the fireplace during the summer evenings to swap stories of the day’s activities.

In 1981 the Post Office was moved to the other end of the building where Spindleshanks wine bar was located. The rest of the building soon became Colonel Clair’s Restaurant. In 1991, the Tahoe Vista Post Office moved to the corner of National Ave. and Highway 28, where you will find it today. Colonel Clair’s expanded into the portion of the building.

The early nineties brought a few more changes to this historical building. Colonel Clair’s became Sweetwater for a while then returned to Colonel Clair’s.

Colonel Clair’s became Crawdaddy’s for a few years prior to the opening of Spindleshanks in March of 2000.

Some of the history and charm of the Sandy Beach Resort has been reclaimed by the owners of Spindleshanks. It is Spindleshanks’ desire that you not only enjoy a scrumptious meal accompanied by a splendid bottle or glass of wine, but you experience a glimpse of a little bit of history.

Spindleshanks Reservations
